BOOKS!
Whenever I wanted to bless my Mom,
I looked for a book to buy her.
She would often read the NY Times Book Reviews,
order a book and then tape the review inside the
front cover.
I'm not sure where this love of the printed word
came from. But I do know this:
though she never had the opportunity
to go to college, she relished
the challenge of learning.

As some of you know who visit me at
Jewels For The Journey,
I have been "digging out" the clutter
in my office that has accumulated
during the past year.
And last week I came across a very special box!
Inside I found several books
I had given my mother over the years.
Any of you recognize the sweet, pink book by Joan Walsh Anglund?
It was copywritten in 1960
and I gave it to Mom in 1970.
Those precious illustrations recall a far more
innocent time and trigger happy memories.
And this is one of the last books I gave her.
Here is how I inscribed it:
Mom,
May our Faithful Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,
see you through this difficult time of recuperation.
Love always!

ReplyDeleteI love books too, and 2 of my very favorites that have spoken chapters to my heart are "Secrets of the Vine" by Bruce Wilkinson, and "Lost in the Middle" by Paul David Tripp.
Hope you are doing well hon. Did I miss something?? Are you having surgery soon??
I know Jim said you had gotten some news about it, but didn't know if you had decided to do
it yet.

Hi! Jess, How Special is this! I love books, when my daughter and I get any extra time when we go shopping, we always end up Barnes & Noble. but here lately when I brouse thru an antique store I'm looking at books! and Oh; I just loved the box of cards. WoW! what memories you have. Your Mom sounds like she was a special lady. Oh! how I miss mine! Love and Blessings!
ReplyDeleteI just can't get over all the little details that made up life for your mom. How wonderful that you are finding all these golden nuggets and preserving them by writing about them! Both my parents were avid readers, and would come home from the library weekly with a huge stack of books. And my dad was blind in one eye! Now, sadly, mom is legally blind and cannot read. She listens to books on tape...but I know how much of a loss it is to her not to be able to carry a book around and read it. My m-i-l reads at least one book a week, and has for decades. We are readers around here too...it would be hard to choose a "favorite" but I have read all of the Jan Karon series and I highly recommend her books. I think I have on my profile that her books allowed me to escape into another world during a particularly stressful time of my life. I'd like to read them all over again. Nice post girlfriend!!
